About me

Language you can use on the day you need it

I am Namal Wijesinghe, a qualified English instructor with twenty years of teaching experience. I specialise in professional spoken English and teach learners from Grade 6 to Grade 11.

In that time I have watched the same thing happen again and again: a student who can fill in every blank on a grammar sheet goes silent the moment someone asks a question in English. My teaching is built to close that gap.

I use communicative methods, real-life role plays and focused pronunciation practice to build confidence and fluency, and I tailor every lesson to Sri Lankan contexts so the progress is practical and measurable.

  • Communicative method You speak from the first few minutes
  • Real-life role plays Interviews, counters, phone calls
  • Pronunciation focus The sounds we actually get wrong
  • Measurable progress You hear it in how you answer

The difference

Two ways to learn English

Most of us were taught the first way. It is why so many people can pass a paper and still freeze in a conversation. This class is built the other way round.

How most of us were taught

  • Grammar rules first. Speaking, maybe, later.
  • Memorise the answer that gets the mark.
  • Mistakes are counted in red.
  • One student answers. Thirty stay quiet.
  • English lives inside the textbook.

How this class runs

  • You speak in the first five minutes, every class.
  • You build the sentence yourself, out loud.
  • Mistakes are the lesson — that is where the fix is.
  • Everyone talks. There is nowhere to hide, kindly.
  • English lives at the counter, the panel, the phone call.

Classes I offer

Three classes, one aim

Each one runs both in Wattegama and live online.

Adults & school leavers

Professional Spoken English

For anyone who needs English at work and freezes when it matters — interviews, meetings, phone calls, and the everyday small talk that decides whether people think you speak English.

  • Interview and workplace role plays
  • Pronunciation and stress drills
  • Phone and email English
  • Speaking under pressure, without notes

Grade 6 · 7 · 8 · 9

School English, Junior

The years where English is either won or lost. Grammar is taught through speaking, vocabulary is built in context, and reading and writing follow once the student is comfortable out loud.

  • Grammar through conversation
  • Vocabulary that sticks
  • Reading comprehension technique
  • Confidence to answer in class

Grade 10 · 11 — O/L

School English, O/L

Paper-focused work without turning English into memorisation. Students learn the structure of every question type, then keep practising speech so the language survives past the exam hall.

  • Essay and letter writing
  • Comprehension and grammar sections
  • Past paper technique and timing
  • Speaking practice alongside the syllabus

The method

How a lesson runs

The same four movements, every class. Students know what is coming, so nobody is caught out.

  1. Warm-up conversation

Class opens with everyone speaking about something ordinary. It removes the hesitation before the real work starts.

  2. Focused pronunciation

A short drill on the sounds, stress and rhythm Sri Lankan speakers most often get wrong — targeted, not general.

  3. Real-life role play

An interview, a complaint at a counter, a presentation, a phone call. You practise the exact situation you are afraid of.

  4. Correction you can use

Feedback given as specific fixes, not a general verdict. You leave knowing the one or two things to change next time.

Where to learn

Two ways to sit in the class

In person

Wattegama

Face-to-face classes in Wattegama, Central Province. Best for students who need the room, the group and the pressure of speaking in front of people.

Live online

Anywhere

The same lesson, delivered live. Students across Sri Lanka and abroad join from home — role plays, correction and speaking time all run exactly as they do in the hall.

Questions

Before you call

Who are these English classes for?

Two groups. School students from Grade 6 to Grade 11, and adults who need professional spoken English for work, interviews or higher studies.

Do I have to come to Wattegama?

No. Classes run physically in Wattegama and live online, so you can join from anywhere in Sri Lanka or overseas. The method is the same in both.

My English is weak. Can I still join the spoken English class?

Yes. The class starts from where you are. Speaking practice is graded, so you are never asked to perform in front of the group before you are ready.

What actually happens in a lesson?

You speak in every one. A warm-up conversation, focused pronunciation work, a role play drawn from a real situation, then correction you can apply in the next class.

Will this help with the O/L English paper?

Yes. Grade 10 and 11 classes cover the paper directly — essay and letter writing, comprehension and grammar — alongside the speaking work that stops English being memorised and forgotten.

How do I join a class?

Call or WhatsApp 077 857 7757. Say the grade or the class you are asking about, and you will be given the current times and how to start.

Getting started

Not sure what to say? Say this.

“Sir, my daughter is in Grade 9. Do you have room in the online class?”

That is the whole call — about thirty seconds. Tell me the grade, or that you want spoken English for work, and whether Wattegama or online suits you. You will get the current times and what to bring to the first class.
